Saint Bernards: Rescuing the rescuers

Joe Kissell at Interesting Thing of the Day writes a story with a happy ending:

In October, 2004, I read an article with some shocking and disheartening news: the Swiss monks responsible for breeding St. Bernards since at least the 17th century were getting out of the dog business. The last 18 dogs living in the alpine hospice where the breed originated were up for sale.
