Jasmine, the Mother Theresa Greyhound

by Myke on March 27, 2009

In 2003, police in Warwickshire, England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had clearly been abused.
Jasmine and Bunny
In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need.

Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved.

They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

But Jasmine had other ideas. No-one remembers now how it began, but she started welcoming all Animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It wouldn’t matter if it was a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, any other lost or hurting Animal, Jasmine would peer into the box or cage and, where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.

Geoff relates one of the early incidents. “We had two puppies that had been abandoned by a nearby railway line. One was a Lakeland Terrier cross and another was a Jack Russell Doberman cross. They were tiny when they arrived at the centre and Jasmine approached them and grabbed one by the scruff of the neck in her mouth and put him on the settee. Then she fetched the other one and sat down with them, cuddling them.”

“But she is like that with all of our animals, even the rabbits. She takes all the stress out of them and it helps them to not only feel close to her but to settle into their new surroundings.

“She has done the same with the fox and badger cubs, she licks the rabbits and guinea pigs and even lets the birds perch on the bridge of her nose.”

Jasmine, the timid, abused, deserted waif, became the animal sanctuary’s resident surrogate mother, a role for which she might have been born. The list of orphaned and abandoned youngsters she has cared for comprises five fox cubs, four badger cubs, 15 chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and 15 rabbits.

Jasmine and Fox

And one roe deer fawn. Tiny Bramble, 11 weeks old, was found semi-conscious in a field. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Jasmine cuddled up to her to keep her warm, and then went into the full foster mum role. Jasmine the greyhound showers Bramble the Roe deer with affection and makes sure nothing is matted.

Jasmine and Fawn

“They are inseparable,” says Geoff “Bramble walks between her legs and they keep kissing each other. They walk together round the sanctuary.

Jasmine and Fawn

It’s a real treat to see them.”

Jasmine will continue to care for Bramble until she is old enough to be returned to woodland life. When that happens, Jasmine will not be lonely. She will be too busy showering love and affection on the next Orphan or victim of abuse.

  Jasmine and Friends

From left, Toby, a stray Lakeland dog; Bramble, orphaned Roe deer; Buster, a stray Jack Russell; a dumped rabbit; Sky, an injured barn owl; and Jasmine with a Mothers heart doing best what a caring Mother would do… Such is the order of God’s Creation.

Grant & Debbie Hawkins 03.28.09 at 7:08 am

thank God for small bits of fun!!! you’ve got a winning, wonderful, piece of perfection there!!! thanks for sharing!!!!!

Valli 03.28.09 at 8:22 pm

This is the most touching story I have ever heard. I love Jasmine and thankfully someone found her and brought her to the place she was meant to be. What a joy she is. A lot of people of the human race could learn something from her.

Clyde 03.30.09 at 1:11 am

Myke,

What a wonderful story and great picture pictures. The gentlemen that took Jasmine in must be a very special person. As humans, there are so many things we could learn from animals (Valli I totally agree with you, I just couldn’t come up with a better way to say it).
Thanks for sharing.

L’Amour des animaux est toujours une belle leçon pour l’homme !
Merci pour ces fabuleux moments.

I was totally moved by the stories of all of the above animals. Myself an animal lover (all) Does God look after us all.

Virginia Kelly 03.30.09 at 1:43 pm

What a beautiful story to start the day off. I am an animal lover and this is one of the loveliest stories I have ever hear\d. Thank’s for the wonderful pictures and the great story.

Luc 03.30.09 at 2:44 pm

As a Greyhound owner I greatly appreciate this story. And, as a Greyhound owner I can certainly understand how Jasmine is as wonderful as she is. Retired racing Greyhounds make wonderful house pets when their racing careers end.

Kathy 03.30.09 at 3:17 pm

Thank you for this beautiful story and photos. If this doesn’t warm your heart and make you smile, you are in trouble. Kathy

Linda 03.30.09 at 4:02 pm

This story was so uplifting and inspired me to try to be as generous and kind as Jasmine. If a dog can turn the other cheek after the abuse she suffered I think I can try harder to do the same.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures and the moments with me.

I am a lover of all animals, birds and insects.

I look after three curs, that include a bitch and two males, and feed a lot of crows and am careful about the tiny insects that stray into my home.

So I know how wonderful these creatures of God are and how they appreciate ones love and affection.

Please do keep up this wonderful work.

Philip.

What a wonderful & inspiring story. WTG Jasmine

What a beautiful story. Having just lost my Greyhound and about to adopt another ex-racer, I know how beautiful these animals are. Jasmine is truly a wonderful mom. She is the perfect example of the personality of Greyhounds. Perhaps there is a reason why dog spelled backwards is God.

Michael H. Semones 03.31.09 at 2:00 pm

This is a wonderful story. If only people could have the same love for each other, we could stop spending millions on war and put our efforts into looking after each other. May the good Lord bless and keep all who read this. Mike

Collette Shumate 03.31.09 at 3:48 pm

What a wonderful story. I was needing a loving story such as this story. Dogs are just wonderful, loving companions to all things.

caladohelena 03.31.09 at 4:03 pm

What a story … for sure one special soul that dog has.

ruben 03.31.09 at 5:45 pm

The more I know men, the more I love animals…

Elizabeth 03.31.09 at 5:46 pm

This story of Jasmine brought tears to my eyes. I truly believe that Jasmine is an ‘angel in doggie disguise’, and the world wouldn’t be in such a mess if we ‘mere humans’ had half the compassion and instinct for nurturing that animals possess.

Lucy 03.31.09 at 6:52 pm

What a lovely dog!! Sweetest animal. Thanks for this uplifting story. I hope humans can bea s kind to ane another. But I am grateful the shelter has kept her. God Bless.

Carol 03.31.09 at 8:45 pm

What can I say that doesn’t iterate every single loving, thankful word already stated about Jasmine and the Sanctuary! I was so touched by this story that I welled with tears … A friend of mine states the following at the end of each of her emails: I want to be the person my dog thinks I am! In this case, I want be the dog that Jasmine is :) . I am a dog LOVER. I hope it’s not against the rules here, but if anyone reads this, please go to: http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com … it takes about 20 seconds to click for: Free Food & Care for animals in need. Do it every day if you can … do it in the name of Jasmine.

JUST ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE CAPTURES OF JASMINE WHAT A DEVOTED MOTHER ! ! HUMANS COULD LEARN A LOT FROM DOGS>

This is such a beautiful, inspiriting story. Even in these terrible times we live in, God always speaks to us through stories like this one, with the love that we all should show to all, and reminds us He is still on the Throne, and in COMPLEAT CONTROL of EVERYTHING! And, that He has a Love such as this for all mankind. All we need to do is to TRUST in Him! Thank You, Father.

Roy, my soon-to-be ex, just sent me your website. Marvelous stories! I keep a file of all the stories I encounter of animals who form cross-species friendships, because I think they are more common than we realize, and also they demonstrate that animals, like humans, have unique individual traits and personalities. I have seen my chickens bond with a pigeon or a turtle, spending part of their day just “hanging out” together like neighbors at the fence.

I will send you a picture I took of our donkey making friends with a squirrel, little Ike, who was shaken out of his nest by a wanna-be hurricane of that name.

I’ll also have to download the picture I took this morning of an apparently cross-gendered chicken, the Broody Roo, sitting on three eggs. It has been a week! I guess sometimes a guy can get a maternal instinct too.

Maggie Morgan 04.01.09 at 9:43 pm

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story of Jasmine and the great photos of the animals. It moved me to tears,my heart goes out to all the abused animals. I will never understand how a human being can do such awful things.
I wish that I could adopt Jamine, but she has her work cut out conforting
other abused creatures.
I thank Carol for sharing the Animalrecue site so that we can help.
Maggie.

BTW, Yes I HAVE seen the Jay Leno bit with the woman who gave CPR to her silkie. I am hardly impressed, I do it all the time!

The Jay Leno piece about the Talking Goat had me going when I first saw it. I tried to run down the goat’s location via the woman who posted the video, it was filmed somewhere in SC a couple of years ago. I believe that goat was really trying very hard to actually communicate. He even spits out the food, and finally, in desperation, stomps his foot and throws his head to the side in a gesture of disgust.

I would like to know what he is trying to say! If there is any chance he is still alive I would love to buy him. I do believe that some animals are brighter than other animals of their species, and a few actually have a desire to communicate outside their species. I very much want to spend time with one of these! I will be a very good listener!

Any clue how we could find this goat? He is so human in all his expressions. Only his voice fails to cooperate.

kelly 04.02.09 at 5:40 am

oh. sweet jasmine! i want to BE her. what a lovely story. thank you for sharing it. we’d love more updates on this amazing dog!

when i was 7, my grandmother told me that my collie who had died wouldn’t be waiting for me when i got to heaven… well, i can’t read about an animal like jasmine and imagine heaven without these wonderful creatures…

Chris 04.02.09 at 6:43 pm

That is one of the most heart-wrenching stories I have ever read. I am literally next to tears…

I found it funny that in the last picture the rabbit is simply called “a dumped rabbit” They totally removed all of his/her agency.

Jasmine is the best dog ever. I can’t believe we live in a world where someone would abuse and abandon such a perfect soul.

jeanne 04.03.09 at 1:43 am

I had an x racing greyhound named cleopatra and this story of jasmine reminded me of her similar personality. they are beautiful and gentle dogs and i will always miss her. god bless jasmine.

LOIS Q 04.03.09 at 2:14 pm

JASMINE
God put her here on earth to do his work, and take care of the unwanted
and motherless creatures. The pictures of here are just mind blowing. I love all
creatures and saved 3 cats from a sure death. They give me so much love
when i come home they are waiting for me at the front door.
I prey i could win the lottery so that i could buy a farm, and take care of all
God’s unwanted creatures just like JASMINE.
When she passes surly the golden gates will be wide open!!!!!!!

Keith Eichhorn 04.03.09 at 4:21 pm

What a wonderful story. We should all follow Jasmine’s example of love and caring.Thank God for Geoff Crewcock!

Kc 04.04.09 at 1:09 am

It’s a great story. I’m glad that after all the mean things that happened to her she can still be so nice to everyone. If only humans were as nice as dogs…

Cristy 04.04.09 at 7:41 am

This was such a touching story of love and devotion. she is just returning the kind gesture that was given to her.I will always remember Jasmine and this story. My prayers are with all of you. God Bless you for what you do for the animals!

Cristy 04.04.09 at 7:43 am

A touching story of love & giving back what was given to her.

Collen Quinn 04.04.09 at 3:43 pm

IF ONLY PEOPLE WERE THIS KIND. WOULD’NT THAT BE NICE.

wonghawan 04.04.09 at 5:12 pm

what a beautiful dog, yes, i wish the world have more love!!!

Ann Bailey 04.05.09 at 1:37 am

This story just reinforces what never ceases to amaze me–that so many people stiil believe that animals are not capable of complex feelings. Duh! Open your eyes and your hearts people!!!!!

jerry 04.05.09 at 9:07 pm

Nuts!!!!

Frank 04.07.09 at 11:23 am

This is the cutest thing I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anja 04.07.09 at 4:00 pm

I am sharing this one with many people. I am not surprised by Jasmine’s compassion and love. I did need to be reminded that there are many fellow animal lovers out there willing to advocate for and take care of God’s creatures. I have been moved by all your comments. Jasmine inspires me to do more for all creatures. Thank -you.

Babs 04.07.09 at 11:29 pm

Stories like this are just so heartwarming. If only more people would follow her example – what a wonderful world we would have.
We just adopted a Boston Terrier, 3 year old female, from a rescue center. She is about 3 years old and had been beening bread in a puppy mill. We had our reservations but have a wonderfully loving little lady who is adjusting to a real home.
Animals can offer so much to a family.

Paul B. 04.08.09 at 7:29 pm

What a heartening story. I think that when life breaks you, and then you are shown kindness, you gain a new outlook. The aggressive side of life loses its attractiveness, and you desire to show others the kindness you have come to value.

And the greatest kindness of all occurred to all of broken humanity some 2000 years ago.

Hank G. 04.12.09 at 4:34 am

Really now :-) Do you truly think that animals care? Do you really think that animals think? Damnnnnn right, they do!!!! It’s us humans, some of whom are capable of unbelievable atrocities directed at all forms of life on this planet, that can fall into the “I’m not involved box”. Animals don’t care or think about greed & non-careing. They’re not made otherwise. It’s us humans that can change the dynamics of how any animal thinks or behaves.
I guess my point is this……..If Jasmine were a human – - -would you follow her lead? Hello Mother Teresa:-)

Hana 04.13.09 at 4:29 pm

I found out this story from a magazine at my vets. Thought it was so wonderfull that I had to google it and read more. She looks so incredibly gentle. I suddenly remembered that a few years back, when I was a single Mum with a 4 yr old boy, a friend has asked me to look after their dog for a few days. I believe it was a greyhound, actually gray, althought it might have been the lurcher. Anyway, she too spent long hours on the sofa with my boy snuggled upto her and asleep! I said that she babysat for my son. What gentle, beautiful dogs. Very heartwarming story, thank you for sharing it!

cam 04.17.09 at 6:01 am

what a load of crock!!!!
one pic actually showed like 6 animals all sitting comfy on a lounge and not eating each other up… so why aint all the animals in that pic getting the same accolades as the greyhound?? the owl (prob doctored) sitting on the dogs back seems just a little small to my untrained eye… just cause one dog dont eat it doesnt mean all the other 4 animals will leave it alone!!!!

Lauren 04.17.09 at 9:50 pm

This story gives me chills everytime I read it!

J. 04.24.09 at 12:09 am

This is a wonderful, inspirational story and I see these stories as examples of how people deny the true emotional depth of animals. It also made me think of the story of Ginny, the dog that rescues stray cats. I decided to look up Ginny and her person Philip Gonzalez and I found a website for anyone interested: http://www.ginnyfanclub.com

Could we place a link on this website? Thanks very much.

stefani 04.30.09 at 7:41 am

As I have two greyhounds that I rescued here in Australia through GAPSA it is wounderful to hear other peoples touching stories and see their greyhound looking fitter than ever bless your heart.

You are an ass.

Must be an angel..

Linda 07.30.09 at 3:11 pm

I think Greyhounds for the most part are very natural mothers. Esp. ex racers. I hear the same stories all the time about ex racers fitting in a new house hold with no problems at all.
I have a neighbor who adopted 2 male ex racers at the same time and she brought them into her house with 2 tomcats. Within 2 days all 4 were eating out of the same bowl. Amazing!!!

Peri McMillan 09.06.09 at 3:03 pm

Inspiring story with beautiful pictures. Very heartwarming. As others had said, if only people could be more like animals.
