Dog Adopts Tiny Pig

A giant farm dog and a tiny piglet cuddle up as if they were family after the baby runt was dismissed by its own mother. Surrogate mum Katjinga, an eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, took on motherly duties for grunter Paulinchen – a tiny pot-bellied pig – and seems to be taking the adoption in her stride. Lonely Paulinchen was luckily discovered moments from death and placed in the care of the dog who gladly accepted it as one of her own. Thankfully for the two-week old mini porker, Katjinga fell in love with her at first sight and adopted her. [continue reading about Great Pets…]

Noah the Pigeon Cares for Baby Rabbits

by Myke on November 11, 2009

From Bob and Georganne Lenham of Wild Rose Rescue Ranch in Texas.

Link: The Pigeon and the Bunnies

These little bunnies, about 6 days old, were attacked by a dog and orphaned. Two out of the litter of five did not survive, and these three were not doing very well.

Enter Noah—the non-releasable, one-legged homing pigeon/rock dove that we have here in rehab. (Photos © Bob Lenham)

Noah kept going over to the bunny cage and looking in—even sleeping in front of the door to the cage. Then, 2 days ago, I only counted 2 bunnies in the cage, so I hurriedly picked Noah up from the front of the cage so I could look inside. And to my surprise—there was the tiny bunny—under Noah’s wing—sound asleep!

Ferret Rescue

by Myke on July 8, 2007

Ferret RescueAngela and Valerie Smith,… who founded a nonprofit ferret rescue six years ago, take in the small animals regardless of age, temperament or health. Each has a sad story.

Buster and Eddie were left in an apartment for a week without food. Victor, who softly wheezes, has lung cancer, possibly from sleeping on improper bedding. Toffee and Oscar were among 20 ferrets abandoned at once.

The Smiths have heard it all. They have firsthand experience in what happens when people fall for a trendy, cute pet in a store, then discover they own an exotic animal with particular needs.

FAST FERRET FACTS
• Ferrets are part of the weasel family
• Life expectancy: six to eight years
• Weight: As much as three or four pounds
• What they eat: High-fat, high-protein diet
• Sleepyheads: Ferrets sleep up to 20 hours a day

Jessica, Pet Hippo

by Myke on July 4, 2007

Jessica: The Hippo In Da House by Emma Hurd from News at Sky.com

Jessica the Hippo

Jessica weighs almost a ton and enjoys sweet coffee and a massage before she goes to bed. She’s a hippo with a big identity crisis – she thinks she’s a family pet.

Tonie Joubert, a retired game warden from Hoedspruit in South Africa, found her washed up on his land by flood water when she was just a day old. He hand raised her, fully expecting her to return to the wild as soon as she was old enough. That was seven years ago and Jessica has never left.

“I don’t know whether she thinks I’m a hippo or she thinks she’s a human,” Tonie explained as he deposited another fistful of sweet potato inside Jessica’s gaping mouth. “But we have the most fantastic bond.” When Tonie calls her name, Jessica honks out her own greeting in return.
