by Myke on March 29, 2007

Chuck

by Ann on March 28, 2007

groundhog
This is our newly acquired pet groundhog, Chuck. (He doesn’t know he is our pet yet.) He just showed up one day a few weeks ago but it seems he has taken up permanent residence here. We suspect he is a refugee from a nearby forest that is being clear cut for high density homes. Such destruction is very sad to us but this guy has been a positive to come our way out of a that negative event. It’s been really fun watching him come and go in our backyard. Our cats, Sweetie, Blue and Mist, find him fascinating, too.

Dog Does the Heimlich

by Ann on March 27, 2007

Toby the golden retriever

Toby, a golden retriever living in Calvert, Maryland, saved his owner from choking by doing his own version of the Heimlich maneuver. When Debbie Parkhurst felt the apple wedge tightly in her throat she attempted to do the manuever on herself unsuccessfully. Toby, apparently a quick study, pushed her to the floor and began jumping up and down on her chest and was able to dislodge the fruit before she passed out. Read the entire story here.

Kids Donate to Help Stray Dog Get Well

by Ann on March 26, 2007

stray dog
When kids in an economically depressed area just south of Atlanta heard that the stray dog that had been hanging around their school needed medical attention, they gave what little spare money they could to help it return to good health. Everyone at the school worked together to then find loving homes for her and her puppies. Read the entire heart-warming story here.

Laurie posted this photo of Stanley on Flickr.

Stanley the cat

Stanley has lived for many years at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. Laurie found him sleeping next to his donation box and took this shot.

The sign on the donation box reads: “Donations for Stanley’s Yearly Veterinarian Check-up – Thank you”
