Siam: The First Siamese in America

Siamese

Siam was a gift from David B. Sickles, the American consulate in Bangkok to First Lady Lucy Hayes, wife of president Rutherford B. Hayes. In 1878 Siam was transported to the US in the hull of a ship into port, then via Wells Fargo to the White House. History reveals that she was allowed to roam the White House at will and often made appearances when during presidential functions. Read the entire story at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center site.

Thanks to Kizzee for the photo posted on Flickr. We seached the internet and could not find a picture of Siam.

Oscar the Cat can predict when nursing home residents are about to die

An article in the New England Journal of Medicine describes a cat who can predict when nursing home residents are about to die at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

Since he was adopted by staff members as a kitten, Oscar the Cat has had an uncanny ability to predict when residents are about to die. Thus far, he has presided over the deaths of more than 25 residents on the third floor of Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. His mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, allowing staff members to adequately notify families. Oscar has also provided companionship to those who would otherwise have died alone. For his work, he is highly regarded by the physicians and staff at Steere House and by the families of the residents whom he serves.

The Cat Who Was Never Let Out and the Bird Who Was Never Let In

A Fable by Dave Pollard

Once upon a time, in a condominium in the centre of a big city, there lived a slightly plump cat who was never let out. Every day, she would stare out the screen window of the condominium at the traffic and the people rushing by and the dogs being walked and the bicycles tinkling their bells and, of course, at the birds.

Any Cat Lover Can Relate to This

a cat's map of the bed

Cartoonist Hillary B. Price nailed it with this cartoon. It’s posted on Strange Maps along with some very interesting cat facts. For instance, did you know cats will almost never meow at other cats; that sound is reserved mostly for communication with humans?

Missy Finds a New Spot to Nap

Missy napping in platter

Cats’ hearing apparatus is built to allow the human voice to easily go in one ear and out the other.
- Stephen Baker

Our girl Missy has found a new napping place - on my antique platter. It’s the perfect size. She looks so cute and comfy that I can’t get mad at her for claiming it has her new bed.

This video of Enstein the Parrot from Pet Star shows how smart these birds can be.
